FAQ - Skincare

How do I know if my skin is normal to dry?
Normal-to-dry skin will have patches where skin cells flake, the surface appears dull and fine lines are more visible, especially around the eyes and above the lip. Harsh cleansing, cold weather, indoor heat and arid climates make your skin feel tight and sensitive. Fortunately, people with normal-to-dry skin are usually free from blemishes and breakouts. For normal-to-dry skin, add Herbalife SKIN Soothing Aloe Cleanser to your daily routine.

Is the skin care safe and free of sulphates?
Sulfates, as consumers understand them, are a group of synthetic detergents that were introduced in the 1930s. (There are other kinds of sulfates, too.) They are so commonplace in the industry that you can find them in just about any cleaning product or product that lathers or foams. They are in shampoo, facial cleansers, soaps and even toothpaste. Unfortunately, these sulfates tend to strip away the protective lipids (natural fats) that encase our skin. When our skin feels squeaky clean after cleansing, it’s really because the outer protective layers have been stripped from our skin and our hair. Sulfates can also fade the color in your hair – especially if your hair is dyed. Herbalife SKIN™ cleansers contain no added sulfates, and they can support healthier looking and feeling skin.
What that "opthamologist tested" mean?
When a product contains a claim of “ophthalmologist tested,” it means that an ophthalmologist, a doctor who studies and treats problems and diseases of the eyes, has evaluated the product for use around and near the eye area for safety. Because the skin around the eyes is so delicate and lacks in both sweat and oil glands, it’s important to ensure that we are only using ingredients that are gentle enough and safe for this part of the body. Herbalife SKIN™ Hydrating Eye Cream and Firming Eye Gel have both been ophthalmologist tested and approved.
Is there a reason I should use dermatologist tested products ?
Absolutely! When you see a product claim such as “dermatologist tested,” it indicates that that specific product was tested by a dermatologist on the skin of human volunteers and shown not to cause any skin reactions. It’s a definite plus when it comes to selecting skin care products. Be confident that every product in the Herbalife SKIN™ line has been dermatologist tested. With that said, it is also important to remember that everyone is different and some people are prone to having sensitive skin. And, just because a product has been dermatologist tested, doesn’t mean that you can’t still have an allergic reaction it. It’s always important to take a look at the ingredient listings if you are aware of something that you may be allergic to. And if you aren’t aware, it’s always good to discontinue the use of a product if you get a negative reaction.
What does the Skin Cancer Foundation seal of approval that is found on the Herbalife SKIN™ Protective Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen mean?
The Skin Cancer Foundation grants the prestigious Seal of Recommendation to products that meet the Foundation’s specific criteria for an effective broad spectrum sunscreen. The Seal is a symbol of safe and effective sun protection for consumers worldwide. The Herbalife SKIN™ Protective Moisturizer Sunscreen was granted this seal of approval as a daily use product.*
Does the daily moisturizer offer more than just skin care protection?
Yes! The Herbalife SKIN™ Protective Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen doesn’t just protect your skin from the damaging rays of the sun. It’s a moisturizer that leaves skin smooth and soft while providing protection. This product reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It will double skin’s moisture over eight hours.† And, as a result, you will notice skin that is more glowing and feels softer and smoother in just seven days
Can I apply my makeup on top of the SPF 30 sunscreen?
Yes. The Herbalife SKIN™ Protective Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen acts as your daily moisturizer. It will be labeled as #5 in your daily skin care steps. Once thoroughly applied, you can then proceed with your makeup application.
I have oily skin. Will the SPF 30 sunscreen be too greasy for me to use?
While everyone’s skin is different and we all react differently to products, the Herbalife SKIN™ Protective Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen has been formulated to be suitable for all skin types.
Do I apply the SPF 30 sunscreen over the Daily Glow Moisturizer?
When it comes to the Herbalife SKIN™ Daily Glow Moisturizer and the Protective Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen, it is best that you choose just one to wear at a time. If you are going into the sun, it is always recommended to use SPF for protection. If you are going to a party in the evening or just staying indoors, the Daily Glow Moisturizer would be perfect for you. For most people, wearing one product on top of the other will be too heavy and potentially pore clogging. Choose to wear just one at a time for the best results.
Is the SPF 30 sunscreen water resistant?
No it is not. If you expose your skin to water or sweat during the day, it is always important to reapply your SPF product.
My neck and throat area seem to be aging faster than my face. Is this normal?
If you aren’t giving your neck and throat the same TLC that you are giving your face, then yes, it is normal. Always treat this area as if it is an extension of your face when it comes to your skin care routine. Be sure to cleanse, exfoliate and apply your serums and moisturizers to this area. This skin is thin and prone to aging so be sure to care for it on a daily basis, in the morning and at night, for the best results.
Is it really necessary to cleanse my face in the morning if I thoroughly?
This is a great question and one that I get a lot. I’ve had people tell me that their skin stills feels moisturized from their night cream when they wake up so they skip their morning skin care regimen altogether. This is NOT a good skin care practice by any means. Believe it or not our bodies go through a lot while we are sleeping and even though you have given your face a thorough cleansing, toning and moisturizing we need to repeat these steps in the morning. Sebum builds up on our skin during the night; your face comes into contact with your pillow case, sheets, blanket and even your hair if it’s long. So not only do you wake up with excess oil on your skin, you also have debris left behind from your Nighttime products as well as whatever you may have come into contact with during your sleep. You must give your face a nice cleansing in the morning and reapply your Toner, Serum, Moisturizer and Eye products. Your products will always work their best when they are applied to a freshly clean face.
Can I wear both the Eye Gel and Eye Cream at the same time?
Each product has been developed for a specific skin care function. The Eye Gel helps firm the skin around the eyes, while the Eye Cream brings much needed hydration and helps minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. For maximum benefit it’s best to stick to a daytime and nighttime regimen that includes the Eye Gel the morning and the Eye Cream at night. However, if you choose to use both, apply the Eye Gel first, wait a minute or so until it dries down, and then apply the Eye Cream over top.
I have been having some issues with my skin lately. Is it possible to apply too much moisturizer?
Yes! You can definitely go into product overload if you aren’t careful. And, in many cases if you do use too much product your skin can negatively react. Your pores may clog, your skin might be itchy and you may even notice a few breakouts occurring. You don’t need a lot of moisturizer to do the job; you just need to be sure you are covering all of the necessary areas. Start out with a small “pea” sized amount or just one pump, being sure to cover your cheeks, forehead, nose, upper lip and end with your chin. If you think you need a little more moisturizer in a specific area just add a little bit more. It’s better to gradually add moisturizer a little at a time then be stuck with too much product on your skin.
How can I ensure that my Day and Nighttime Moisturizers are working to their fullest potential?
It’s easy! Always start with clean skin so there are no barriers to prevent your moisturizing products from penetrating into your skin. And the best way to ensure proper absorption is to be sure to exfoliate your skin on a regular basis. We want to get those dead and dying skin cells out of the way so our favorite products can do their job. I always say that there’s no point in wasting good product on dead skin. Be sure to use your exfoliating scrub 1 to 3 times a week. Freshly cleansed and exfoliated skin will help your products deliver their fullest potential.
What is the best way to apply moisturizer to my skin? Is there some special trick I should know about?
Applying moisturizer to your face takes a bit of practice to ensure you are using the right amount of product and that you are covering all areas that need to be covered. I have found two successful ways of applying creams and lotions. Hopefully one will be perfect for you. The first is the 5 dot method. For this practice you simply pump your moisturizer onto your fingertip. Then, place 5 dots of product on your face; one dot on your forehead, nose, chin and each cheek. Once the dots are in place you simply blend outwards and upwards against gravity until all areas are covered. Based on the condition of your skin you will be able to determine if 1 pump of product is enough. The second way to apply moisturizer is to pump the product into the palm of your clean hand. I would start with just one pump at first. Rub your palms together about 2 to 3 times. This will ultimately warm the product up a bit for when you massage into your skin. You can start with your cheeks which are usually the dryest, move up to your forehead, nose and end with your chin. If you have ever had a facial this is probably how your product was applied. Give each method a try and see which one you prefer!
Sometimes when I cleanse my skin it stings. What am I doing wrong?
The best way to cleanse your skin to avoid any type of stinging is to dampen your hands and face with warm water. Then squeeze a dollop of cleanser into your damp hand. Rub your hands together and then gently, in a circular motion, massage into your skin. Sometimes, especially for those who have skin sensitivity, applying the concentrated ingredients in a cleanser directly to dry skin can cause a bit of irritation and stinging. By having water as buffer…problem solved.
How long should my Herbalife SKIN products last?
All of the Herbalife SKIN products were developed to last for approximately 30 days. Now of course if you wash your face three times a day instead of two or simply love, love, love your night cream and really like to slather it on at night you may fall a bit short of 30 days. But when used as directed Herbalife SKIN products should last approximately 30 days.
Since being pregnant I have developed dark patches on my face. Help!
You’re not alone. It’s common for pregnant women to develop blotchy patches of darkened skin. This condition is commonly known as “the mask of pregnancy” but officially known as chloasma or melasma. It’s generally triggered by a change in hormones during pregnancy. The blotches can appear on your cheeks, forehead, upper lip and nose and in some cases they form the shape of a mask. While the blotchiness is not limited to the face and can appear elsewhere on the body, the face seems to be the most concerning for women. It’s important during this time to never leave your skin exposed to the sun without wearing a good moisturizer with sunscreen. The unprotected skin can become even darker if not protected. So cover up, wear your sunscreen and know that the darkening, for most, usually fades within a few months of having your beautiful baby.
I have BACNE! What can I do to make it better?
Bacne is the name given to blemishes and breakouts that are commonly found on the back and shoulders. This area of the body is generally covered up with clothing and very hard to reach making it hard to maintain. Remember to keep your skin clean. Exfoliating helps keep your skin clean—including using products like the Herbalife SKIN Instant Reveal Berry Scrub and washing thoroughly. This will help remove any dry, flakey skin while keeping the area clean. You can also apply a clay based mask like the Herbalife SKIN Purifying Mint Clay Mask to help draw out impurities. Smooth onto the affected areas, leave until dry, rinse away with lots of warm water and pat, don’t rub until dry, and wash thoroughly afterwards. Although cleansing the skin does fight or prevent acne, it’s important to keeping pores open and clean.
I’m only 21 years old. Do I need to worry about anti-aging products at my age?
The best piece of advice I can give you is to tell you not to wait for the inevitable to happen when you can take a proactive approach against fighting the signs of aging. Anti-aging skin care products are perfect for helping to correct the signs of aging but they are equally as good as helping to protect against the signs of aging. Don’t wait until you have your first wrinkle before you reach for your first eye cream or skin serum. Every woman, and man for that matter, in their 20’s should get started on a good daily skin care regimen to cleanse, treat, target and protect their skin.
At what point do I apply serum? Is it better to apply before or after Night Cream or Day Lotion?
Serum always goes on BEFORE your moisturizers. Serums are generally a bit more light weight in texture and consistency. They are formulated to deliver ingredients deeper into the skin then most moisturizers can reach. This is why it’s so important to put serum on first followed by your Night and Day Creams. Remember to always cleanse and tone your skin prior to applying your serum for maximum results.
Why do we need special products for the eye area? Can’t I just use my daytime moisturizer or night cream?
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to just have one product to use from head to toe? Unfortunately, to achieve maximum skin health benefits, this would not be the best idea. The skin around the eyes is different from the skin elsewhere on the body because it lacks both oil and sweat glands. And because the skin in the eye area is so delicate, we must ensure that we are using only those ingredients that are safe and gentle enough for this part of the face.
What is the difference between an eye gel and an eye cream?
An eye gel is generally used during the day to help revive the under eye area, providing a wonderful cooling effect that refreshes and energizes the delicate skin. The Herbalife SKIN Firming Eye Gel helps increase your skin’s elasticity. An eye cream can be used during the day or night, but is generally applied at bedtime. Richer in texture than an eye gel, eye creams provide extra moisture and vitamins. Try Herbalife SKIN Firming Eye Gel and Hydrating Eye Cream for great results.
How do I apply eye products?
Always apply your Herbalife® SKIN eye products using your ring finger only. This is the weakest finger on the hand and therefore provides the gentlest application. You never want to tug or pull the delicate skin around the eye area. Gently pat the product into the skin around the eye area, starting about a half inch below the eye.
Sometimes after I put my skin care products on I notice that when I rub my face the product feels “gummy” and peels off of my skin. Why is this happening?
This is a great question that we have probably all experienced at one time or another. The simple answer is we have applied too much product. The best way to ensure that this doesn’t happen is to use the 5 Dot Rule. Simply place a small dot of product on your forehead, nose, chin and a dot on both cheeks and blend outwardly from there. This should give you ample coverage. If you feel you need a bit more you can add a little bit more to the areas that need it but by following this step you are less likely to over apply your products.
Is it necessary to use a moisturizer if I have oily skin?
In a word, yes! In order for your skin to function at its best, it must have adequate moisture. Even the oiliest of skin can have low moisture levels. No matter what your skin type is, moisturizing is an essential step for healthy skin and should be done every morning and every evening before bedtime. The Herbalife SKIN line includes a Polish Citrus Cleanser developed for normal-to-oily skin.
Why is using a night cream important?
Skin cells replace themselves faster than any other cells in the body. The peak hours for cell reproduction occur while you are sleeping. It is during this time when your body repairs the damage that was done during the day. Because this is when new cells are born, it is imperative to use a night cream that is enriched with vitamins and nutrients to facilitate healthy cell renewal. Our Herbalife SKIN line contains an antioxidant-rich night cream for all skin types to help fight the signs of aging.
My skin is very dry in the winter. Can I wear Night Cream during the day?
You absolutely can. Sometimes our skin needs a little more help when the weather turns cold and extra hydration is essential. Just remember if you are going outside you still need to protect your skin from the damaging rays of the sun by applying a product containing Sun Protection Factor (SPF).
When it comes to my neck and throat area, is there anything specific I should be doing?+
Yes! Train your brain to recognize your neck and throat as an extension of your face. You can cleanse, tone, exfoliate, moisturize and even mask this area. You will experience the same results that you experience on your face.
Why do I occasionally get dark residue on my cotton pad when I tone my skin? Am I not cleansing properly?
Much of the residue found on your cotton ball after cleansing and toning is a combination of exfoliated skin cells and sebum (oil) that appear dark against the cotton. When swiped across your skin, the toner helps lift the damaged and dying skin cells from the surface. Use Herbalife SKIN Energizing Herbal Toner every morning and every evening for best results.
When I use the Instant Reveal Berry Scrub, how hard should I scrub the product into my skin for best results?
If you are new to skin exfoliation then I suggest taking it slow, light and easy. Dampen your face and hands with warm water. In a circular motion gently massage the scrub into your skin avoiding the eye area. A gentle scrubbing will help remove dead surface skin cells. The harder you scrub the more skin you will remove. For a more intense exfoliation you can apply the scrub directly to dry skin, massage thoroughly and rinse with warm water. You will know through trial and error just how much scrubbing your skin can tolerate. Just remember, you don’t want to overdo it and leave your skin red and irritated. Practice makes perfect!
Why should I use a mask?
Masks perform accelerated cleansing, toning and moisturizing all in one. They add moisture or absorb oils from the skin, and help refine the appearance of pores, dissolve impurities and tone the skin. The result is a soft, smooth complexion with improved texture and tone. It is a good idea to always follow your mask with a moisturizer or night cream to help maintain a healthy moisture balance.
How long should I leave Herbalife® SKIN Purifying Mint Clay Mask on for maximum benefit?
You should leave your Herbalife® SKIN Purifying Mint Clay Mask on for at least 5 minutes,
and up to 10 minutes for maximum benefit.
Why do I need to exfoliate?
Everyone exfoliates naturally. In fact, we lose about a million skin cell particles every minute. Using an exfoliating scrub helps this process along. Teenagers completely regenerate their skin about every 14 days. By the time we reach age 40, that rate can increase to about 30–40 days, resulting in dry, ashy or mottled-looking skin. Proper exfoliation reduces the time cells sit on the surface. The scrubbing particles slough off the dry, dead cells and bring the newer skin cells to the forefront, giving us a healthier and more vibrant complexion. Herbalife SKIN Instant Reveal Berry Scrub contains Blueberry seeds for exfoliation along with jojoba beads to smooth and polish the skin.
Is it true that you can over exfoliate your skin?
es, it is true! We all love the way our skin looks after it’s been exfoliated. All of the dead skin cells are gone, our fine lines don’t seem so noticeable and our skin just glows. But too much of a good thing can lead to negative results. Over exfoliating can cause excess oil production and may worsen breakouts. Your skin can become irritated, you may notice areas of redness, small bruises may appear and you may even develop minor abrasions that could take some time to heal. Use a gentle exfoliating scrub, such as Herbalife SKIN Instant Reveal Berry Scrub with Blueberry seeds to gently scrub those dead skin cells away, leaving behind a fresh, beautiful, non-irritated face. Just don’t overdo it!
If I decide to use a mask and exfoliate on the same day, which should I do first?
I would advise exfoliating the skin first. There is no sense in wasting a good mask on dead skin cells. By exfoliating first, you start with a nice, fresh face to mask. This will allow the mask to really deliver its benefits without any interference from dead or dying skin cells.
I occasionally have outbreaks of rosacea. Should I use moisturizer with SPF?
Sun protection is important for everyone, including those who suffer from rosacea. Because some substances can trigger rosacea on contact, please consult your doctor before using any skin care product if you have this condition. No Herbalife® products are treatments for rosacea.
How can men prevent skin irritation from shaving?
A man’s skin can be just as sensitive as a woman’s. Daily shaving can be very irritating and in some cases can lead to painful shaving bumps. Applying aftershave lotions, which are primarily alcohol-based, often causes irritation and can be dehydrating to the skin. Instead of aftershave, apply the alcohol-free Herbalife SKIN Energizing Herbal Toner, containing witch hazel. If you experience razor bumps or other minor skin abrasions, apply the Herbal Aloe Soothing Gel for comforting relief.
Is it possible to wash my face too much?
es. Excessive cleansing can irritate your skin by stripping its natural oils and drying it out. You should cleanse your face twice a day if you have normal-to-dry skin and up to three times if you have very oily skin. Anything more is excessive. Be sure to use only facial cleansers when washing your face, not bar soap. Our Herbalife SKIN line has a cleanser for both dry and oily skin types. Remember to be gentle and only use warm water when cleansing. Do not use water that is too hot or too cold because such extremes in temperature can traumatize the capillaries in your skin. And always be sure to gently pat your skin dry; do not rub!
